Another choreography chunk combo! It's fun and weird to go back to these. They're like little time capsules: check out that lil rock back step with "Betty Boop" arms that I basically threw into every damn thing in that time period. I taught this workshop-style for a dance showcase (not one of my own) and it was probably a little too complicated for the class. But this was before I learned how to adjust to class levels...sort of. I still have a habit of being a little too dense, both choreographically and mentally. 🤪⁠ PS: next Saturday is my last stream of the year!

This week's "combo" is actually a snippet from my olddd "Dirty Funky Gawazi" choreography (2012).⁠

I got a little worried watching this one again because I thought I had accidentally stolen Suhaila's choreo. I can't find her group doing her choreo on YouTube anymore, but I found another group doing it. I think the choreos are distinct* but I was just so heavily influenced by Suhaila the time--plus that was the year we were also learning her Cymbal Dance, so it makes sense there would be a lot of stylistic similarities. So....I stole honestly. 😆⁠

*I feel very confident that making Naaja and Amy/@irishpiratess fall on the floor and roll around and also making Amy do a push-up was something dumb I came up with all by myself.⁠

Many moons ago I took a class series with Azhia, who introduced me to the concept of dance sketching. Basically you put on a song and just move to it without expectation. It doesn't have to be (and probably shouldn't be) a song you are actually trying to choreograph to, and the movement doesn't have to be dance movement. It's just a way to get the juices flowing. ⁠

If you come up with a movement(s) you like, you can note it and use it for something else. I still use this technique all the time and I even use one of the same songs I used in Azhia's series: "Comet Song" by Dethklok. Believe it or not, this combo was sketched in that song. 😆 So I called it "Comets" because I'm running out of names for things. ⁠

If the #DanceCohesion chest tilt circle demi-point stationary drill with finger cymbal singles loop isn't challenging enough, you could try calling out all the directions of the movement and what the hands are doing except everything is reversed because you're mirroring. I'm not complaining, I'm just pleased with myself for sort of?? doing it?? for 46 seconds. 😂⁠

Side note: I'm also very pleased with how my face mic picked up the cymbals! I might adjust the music down next time so they are easier to hear. ⁠
